This home was a delight to photograph. A major renovation had just been completed and the owners were still away, so there wasn’t the usual build up of clutter from everyday living to clean up or shuffle around out of the shot. You know, a pile of shoes at the door, half opened mail on the desk or dishes in the kitchen. Having a clean and clutter-free space is essential when it comes time to photograph it.
The ceiling is a main feature of this renovation, a beautiful architectural detail that warrants some extra attention. It was important to light it in such a way that accentuates the beams and lines without overpowering the room. Tricky business when it’s all white, but as you can see, the lighting technique that we chose to work with made the strong lines and shape in the ceiling pop right out.
In addition, choosing the right time of day to shoot gave us a touch of blue sky, just enough to draw your eye to the angled windows in the vaulted ceiling. Without having the luxury of a home stager for this project, we made do with the available furnishings. Ideally though, a home stager will bring in furnishings and design elements that support the refreshed and updated feel of a newly renovated space. Instead, we chose lenses and camera angles that minimize the existing furniture and help the viewer focus on the design and finishings of the house.
